Elouise: The English Bulldog
This is a story I wrote an illustrated about Elouise. It is a work in progress and these are my preliminary roughs. There are a few illustrations that I plan on completely changing. There are also some minor changes I want to make, like giving her horns (for the bull in a china shop) and giving her wings (for the cute bug). I figured I would post it here and she what people thought. ( Read more... ) Current Music: country pickin' |

Clarence
My Mom and Grandma put an order through for Clarence at their local book store in Clinton, NJ. It has been a long, long time and they haven't received their books. This is the email I got from my Mom today: Harvey at the bookstore finally got a live person at the publisher. He said they are sold out! That the book was so popular!!! He prevailed on them to get our copies..."It's for the illustrator's mom". They said mid-June. I ordered them the day after I got my book. Be well. Love, Mom My question is, How many did they print? None the less, its pretty cool they sold out. For anyone who hasn't got a copy yet, it might be a little bit. Here is the link for Clarence |

Mission Park Community Mural Project We have been working for weeks on our mural plan. This past weekend we finally got our images up on the wall. We worked all day Saturday scraping the wall, then priming. Sunday we spent all morning laying out a 1 ft grid on the wall (which corresponds to our 1 inch grid on our drawing). The mural is 14 by 80 foot. Sunday afternoon we began drawing out our images. It definitely had it's challenges and was more difficult then I thought it was going to be. For one, drawing that big is different for me. Two, it is hard to draw across the planks of wood because my charcoal would skip and I couldn't get a straight line. Three, being on a ladder high up and that close to the surface is tough. I would draw and then step off the ladder and my drawing would be totally distorted. I did get the hang of it after a few attempts at drawing my pirate ship. The challenges are fun though and I really can't wait to put color on the wall next weekend.

I love this process. It is awesome working outside in the beautiful weather. The people I am working with are really fun and interesting. It's art and I love art. I love the manual labor side of it, scraping and lugging around ladders and stuff. It is also really interesting to be making art out in public. People have a lot to say as they walk by. My pirate ship is right in the corner of the park next to Valencia St. I have had lots of people watching me and curious about what we are doing. Some people are nice, some not so nice. That little corner also seems to be a popular place for people to use the bathroom. One guy peed on the fence in my area right in front of all of us in broad daylight. One guy said, "Are you going to make a good mural or a bad mural?" We said, "Ahhh a good one..." He said, "Oh, good. Cause there is nothing worse then bad public art."

Brian Molnar and His Band
My brother and his band (they call themselves "the handsome cowboys") were out for a long weekend. It was a blast. The band stayed with us in our little apartment. It worked, but you could barely step into the living room. We toured around the city so they could see the sites. They drank tons of cheap beer, hung out at the local lesbian bar and ate a lot of Mexican food down on Mission St. They played a gig out in Modesto and one here in San Francisco. We couldn't make it out to Modesto show on Friday because I got out of work too late. The gig in San Francisco was awesome. A bunch of bands played that night and all the music was good. It was so neat to see them all up on stage together after hanging with them all weekend. It was totally great to hang out with my brother, because we never do. |

Poster Contest
I had 16 Boys & Girls Club members participate in the Haight / Ashbury Street Fair Children's Alley Poster Contest. I am proud to say that one of my kids won the contest and will have her art work seen on posters and t-shirts all over the city for this event. She also will receive $150.00 and a $50.00 Mendal's Art Store gift certificate. |

Eating
I am a pretty bad cook and Matthew is not interested in cooking. That being said we both want to eat at home more. I get home from work usually around 8pm and we usually don't feel like going out to eat at that point (plus we'd loose our parking spot). Take-out has been our cop-out, which it's just plain unhealthy and not good to do often. The other thing we do is Digiorno's Pizza, which is also unhealthy and we are also pretty bored of the frozen Amy's meals. Spaghetti is starch and boring. I am looking for suggestions (keep in mind that we are vegetarian). Any very easy recipes or easy things to pop in the oven that are tasty? What do you all do for at home cop-out meals that are relatively healthy? |

Hot off the sticks... Just finished (although it needs blocking). Going to hand deliver it to my friend Carla in Portland tomorrow. Probably the most challenging knitting project I've done yet. |

Obama '08 Matthew and I volunteered for the Obama campaign yesterday. We held up Obama signs outside the ferry building when Bill Clinton was speaking. It rocked. We had a great response from people driving by and pedestrians. There were more of us with Obama signs then people with Hillary signs, and our signs were bigger. A few more photos on Flickr. Adventures in Yosemite Ramble
We went to Yosemite this weekend. Woke up super early on Saturday, packed up the car and headed for the mountains. We got to our friend Hagit's house in El Portal by 10:30AM. We hung out a bit there, but not for too long. Hagit packed up her stuff to go back east, we were giving her a ride to SFO Sunday morning. We left her house and headed into the valley to get some hot cocoa and see the mountains all covered in snow. The plan all along was to head up to Evergreen Lodge for the night and see The Adam Burns Band (Adam Burns is Hagit's boss at the Yosemite Institute and happens to be a local celebrity). We started up Route 120 and the battery light in our Echo came on, then the car began to loose power. It was interment and we kept on going. It also began to flurry at this point. About 5 miles up Route 120 our car completely dies. This is a snowy, curvy mountain pass and we had zero cell phone service. We flagged down cars and asked if they either had jumper cables or cell phone reception. Lots of people said they had neither, then one couple had service. We got into their SUV (it was snowing really hard at this point) and the guy tried to call our roadside assistance. He would get an operator and tell them part of the information and then loose the call (that happened at least 3 times). While we were sitting in the car a blue Echo stops and the guy gets out to see what's going on, it was Adam Burns (the guy playing at The Evergreen). He gave use the number for the park rangers and Hagit called. Adam pulled his car ahead of our car and then he started directing cars that were coming around the curve. Suddenly a black pickup comes speeding around the curve almost hitting Adam slams on his brakes and fishtails. Then a blue pickup comes barreling behind slams on his brakes fishtailing into Adam Burn's blue Echo. The black pickup kept going and didn't even stop at all. The blue pickup pulls to the side. Now we got a super shitty situation. The people in the SUV that let us use their phone decided to leave the bad scene all together. The park rangers arrived and set up flares and had everyone move to a pullout a little ways up the road. One ranger jumped our car, which actually worked. We met everyone up at the pullout and I filled out an incident report. Matthew and Hagit put the snow chains on the car because the conditions were that bad at this point. The next thing we new they were frisking and arresting the guys that were in the blue pickup. We are not sure exactly why they were arrested. I think they must have had shady records. We got in the car and headed out of there. We weren't sure if the car would start again if we turned it off and it was forecast to continue snowing. Hagit had a flight to make for Sunday afternoon. We all agreed the smartest thing to do was drive back to San Francisco right then. Lots of driving that day. Got back to SF and had a great sushi dinner and a bottle of wine and hit the hay. I can hardly believe all that happened, it was all very unreal. That was the only snow Matthew and I have experienced this winter. |
